Best Practices in Pediatric Sleep Medicine

Course Chairs
Althea Robinson Shelton, MD, MPH; Valerie Crabtree, PhD, DBSM

Learning Objectives

  • Diagnose and classify pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) based on clinical presentation and polysomnographic findings to guide evidence-based treatment planning
  • Differentiate central sleep apnea from obstructive sleep apnea in pediatric patients based on clinical features and polysomnographic data to guide appropriate evaluation and management strategies
  • Develop individualized management plans for pediatric narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia using behavioral strategies, pharmacologic options, and patient-centered education
  • Distinguish parasomnias from nocturnal seizures in pediatric patients using clinical history and diagnostic tools to guide appropriate referral and treatment pathways
  • Evaluate sleep disturbances commonly associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and ADHD to tailor behavioral and environmental interventions that support improved sleep outcomes
  • Implement updated strategies to mitigate the impact of screen time, digital media use, and technology-related behaviors on pediatric sleep health across developmental stages
  • Identify and classify pediatric circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders to guide developmentally appropriate behavioral and chronobiologic treatment strategies
  • Apply behavioral and cognitive strategies, including stimulus control, sleep restriction, and relaxation techniques, to manage pediatric insomnia without pharmacologic intervention
  • Evaluate pharmacologic options for the treatment of pediatric insomnia, considering indications, efficacy, safety profiles, and developmental appropriateness
